Ancient alien theorists like Erich von Däniken believe that, thousands of years ago, extraterrestrials landed on Earth, where they were hailed as gods and helped shape human civilization. But what proof could possibly exist for such an encounter? The Nazca Lines

Etched into a high plateau in Peru’s Nazca Desert, a series of ancient designs stretching more than 50 miles has baffled archaeologists for decades. Along with simple lines and geometric shapes, they include drawings of animals, birds and humans, some measuring more than 600 feet across. Because of their colossal size, the figures can only be appreciated from way up in the air—and there is no evidence that the Nazca people, who inhabited the area between 300 B.C. and 800 A.D., invented flying machines. According to ancient alien theorists, the figures were used to guide spaceships as they came in for a landing, and the lines served as runways.

Vimanas

Many Sanskrit epics, which were written in India more than two millennia ago, contain references to mythical flying machines called vimanas. Pointing to similarities between descriptions of vimanas and reports by people who claim to have seen UFOs, ancient alien theorists have suggested that astronauts from other planets visited India during ancient times.

The Moai of Easter Island

The Polynesian island of Easter Island is famous for its “maoi”: the 887 giant human figures with enormous heads that guard its coastline. Roughly 500 years old, these monolithic statues stand 13 feet high and weigh 14 tons, but some are twice as tall and much heavier. How could human beings without sophisticated tools or knowledge of engineering craft and transport such incredible structures? Some ancient alien theorists believe it is the work of visiting extraterrestrials who left their mark on the island.    

Puma Punku

Located in the Bolivian highlands, Puma Punku is a field of stone ruins scattered with giant, finely carved blocks. Such precise workmanship on a massive scale would have been nearly impossible without modern tools and machines, yet the ruins are more than 1,000 years old. Ancient alien theorists have hypothesized that extraterrestrials with advanced engineering techniques created the site or advised the people who built it.

The Book of Ezekiel

In the Book of Ezekiel, part of the Hebrew bible, a prophet has a vision of a flying vessel accompanied by fire, smoke and a loud noise. Some ancient alien theorists have argued that the vehicle’s design closely mirrors that of a modern spaceship. Rather than a divine intervention, then, perhaps the text describes an early encounter between humans and alien astronauts.

 

Pacal’s Sarcophagus

Pacal the Great ruled over the Mayan city of Palenque, in what is now southern Mexico, during the seventh century. Upon his death, he was buried inside a pyramid called the Temple of Inscriptions. The intricately carved lid of his sarcophagus has become a classic work of Mayan art—and an oft-cited piece of evidence for ancient alien theorists. In their view, Pacal is pictured in a spaceship during takeoff, with his hand on a control panel, his foot on a pedal and an oxygen tube in his mouth. According to ancient alien theorists, extraterrestrials with superior knowledge of science and engineering landed on Earth thousands of years ago, sharing their expertise with early civilizations and forever changing the course of human history. But how did this concept develop, and is there any evidence to support it? Ancient alien theory grew out of the centuries-old idea that life exists on other planets, and that humans and extraterrestrials have crossed paths before. The theme of human-alien interaction was thrust into the spotlight in the 1960s, driven by a wave of UFO sightings and popular films like 2001: A Space Odyssey. The space program played no small part in this as well: If mankind could travel to other planets, why couldn’t extraterrestrials visit Earth? In 1968, the Swiss author Erich von Däniken published Chariots of the Gods?, which became an immediate bestseller. In it, he put forth his hypothesis that, thousands of years ago, space travelers from other planets visited Earth, where they taught humans about technology and influenced ancient religions. He is regarded by many as the father of ancient alien theory, also known as the ancient astronaut theory. Most ancient alien theorists, including von Däniken, point to two types of evidence to support their ideas. The first is ancient religious texts in which humans witness and interact with gods or other heavenly beings who descend from the sky—sometimes in vehicles resembling spaceships—and possess spectacular powers. The second is physical specimens such as artwork depicting alien-like figures and ancient architectural marvels like Stonehenge and the pyramids of Egypt. If aliens visited Earth in the past, could they make an appearance in the future? For ancient alien theorists, the answer is a resounding yes. They believe that, by sharing their views with the world, they can help prepare future generations for the inevitable encounter that awaits them.

In the article entitled “The Ascendancy of the Scientific Dictatorship”, we examined the transmogrification of the elite’s religious power structure into a technocratic oligarchy legitimized predominantly by science. The history and background of this “scientific dictatorship” is a conspiracy, created and micro-managed by the historical tide of Darwinism, which has its foundations in Freemasonry. In this article, we shall examine the “scientific dictatorship” as an enormous project in the re-sculpting of reality itself.

The Technocracy

Freemason Aldous Huxley coined the term “scientific dictatorship” and presented an allegorized version of the concept in his famous roman ‘a clef entitled Brave New World. Huxley was mentored by Freemason H.G. Wells, who also presented a fictionalized “scientific dictatorship” under the appellation of the “Technocracy.” This is an interesting designation for a world government managed by functional elites and scientists. It is derived from the Greek word techne, which means craft. Given Wells’ membership in the Craft of Freemasonry, the synchronicity becomes apparent.
Moreover, the term craft is associated with witchcraft or wicca. From the term wicca, one derives the word wicker (Hoffman, 63). Examining this word a little closer, Michael Hoffman explains: “The word wicker has many denotations and connotations, one of which is ‘to bend,’ as in the ‘bending’ of reality’” (Hoffman, 63). This is especially interesting when considering the words of Mark Pesce, co-inventor of Virtual Reality Modeling Language. Pesce writes: “The enduring archetype of techne within the pre-Modern era is magic, of an environment that conforms entirely to the will of being” (Pesce).
Techne is also from whence the word technology is derived. The significance of this fact becomes evident when Pesce opines:

Each endpoint of techne has an expression in the modern world as a myth of fundamental direction — the mastery of matter, and the collection of spirit. The myth of matter comes to its end as the absolute expression of will as artifact; in a word, nanotechnology (Pesce).

Herein is the final objective of New World Order … the reconfiguration of reality through the sorcery of technology.

Radical Empiricism: The Epistemological Pretext for Re-Sculpting Reality

As we have established in previous articles, most of contemporary science is predicated upon empiricism. This is the epistemological stance that all knowledge is derived exclusively through the senses. Lyndon LaRouche explains the inherent flaws of empiricism:

By the nature of our processes of sense-perception, our direct perception of the world “outside our skins” (so to speak) does not show us that world “outside our skins,” but, rather, the impact of that unperceived real world upon the biology of our mental-sensory processes. In other words, the shadows on the wall of Plato’s Cave (LaRouche).

Thus, the world becomes little more than an ever-shifting pliancy of impressions. All that a percipient surveys is an amorphous amalgam of “shadows.” It comes as little surprise that an exclusively empirical approach relegates causality to the realm of metaphysical fantasy. The obviation of causality holds enormous ramifications for science.
What is perceived as A causing B could be merely a consequence of circumstantial juxtaposition. Although temporal succession and spatial proximity are axiomatic, causal connection is not. Affirmation of causal relationships is impossible. Given the absence of causality, all of a scientist’s findings must be taken upon faith. Ironically, science relies on the affirmation of such cause and effect relationships. This is all one can deduce while working under the paradigm of radical empiricism. Thus, the elite merely exchanged one form of mysticism for another. It comes as little surprise that, within certain occult circles, contemporary science is considered sorcery disseminated on the popular level. For instance, Satanic high priest Anton LaVey regarded science and technology as “sanctioned, but ineffectual ‘occultism’” (Raschke, 214).
In fact, science has become a new form of sorcery for the manipulation of matter. According to the epistemology of empiricism, reality is little more than a quagmire of impressions. It is analogous to a holograph, the fabric of which is pliable enough to be manipulated. Thus, reality becomes the ever-shifting canvas upon which scientists paint whatever they wish. The scientist’s role in this reconfiguration of reality was delineated in an esoteric tract entitled The Way of Light. Authored by Comenius in 1668, the manifesto was dedicated to the British Royal Society. Researcher Michael Hoffman elaborates:

In it, Comenius addressed the first formal scientists as “illuminati” and outlined their scientific purpose, “…which is to secure…the empire of the human mind over matter” [emphasis added] (Hoffman, 23).

Years later, Bertrand Russell would recapitulate the “illuminati’s” (i.e., scientists’) role in the establishment of “the empire of the human mind over matter.” Redefining science as an instrument of radical empiricism, Russell wrote:

The way in which science arrives at its beliefs is quite different from that of medieval theology. Experience has shown that it is dangerous to start from general principles and proceed deductively, both because the principles may be untrue and because the reasoning based upon them may be fallacious. Science starts, not from large assumptions, but from particular facts discovered by observation or experiment. From a number of such facts a general rule is arrived at, of which, if it is true, the facts in question are instances… Science thus encourages abandonment of the search for absolute truth, which belongs to any theory that can be successfully employed in inventions or in predicting the future. “Technical” truth is a matter of degree: a theory from which more successful inventions and predictions spring is truer than one which gives rise to fewer. “Knowledge” ceases to be a mental mirror of the universe, and becomes merely a practical tool in the manipulation of matter [emphasis added] (Russell, 13 – 15).

In other words, science or “knowledge” becomes the instrument by which the “Illuminati” re-sculpts reality. It also becomes an epistemological weapon against the minds of men, wielded by the proverbial Descartean “evil demon.” This was the central precept of Weishaupt’s Illuminati and the conceit of the Technocracy today: God was not in the beginning, but evolved from Man in the end. According to this conceit, Man could recreate Eden without the God. It comes as little surprise that sci-fi predictive programmer and British intelligence asset Arthur C. Clarke commented: “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”

 

The Global Holodeck

The technocratic agenda of reconfiguring the “holograph of reality” is most clearly delineated by William Sims Bainbridge, sociologist and member of the National Science Foundation. Citing sci-fi predictive programmer Gene Roddenberry, Bainbridge writes:

An interesting feature of the popular Star Trek universe is that mass-media popular culture is absent from its fictional future world. Several characters play musical instruments and the preferred styles of music are classical, whether European or belonging to some other high culture. Perhaps precisely because the characters are living very future-oriented lives, they turn to historical sources like Mozart for their aesthetic recreation. Presumably, the copyrights have all expired. Instead of passively watching television programmes and movies, they programme their own “holodeck” virtual reality dramas in which they play active roles, often with historical settings. Government is certainly not in the science fiction business, but government-encouraged research is currently developing the technology to realise the Star Trek prophecies (Bainbridge, “Memorials”).

Evidently, government-sponsored research programs are already dedicated to the Technocracy’s vision of re-sculpting reality. Bainbridge is certainly no stranger to this vision, as is evidenced by his association with Scientology. In Religion and the Social Order, Bainbridge presented a mandate for scientists to become “religious engineers” in the development of a new world religion (Bainbridge, “New Religions, Science, and Secularization“). This new world religion, which Bainbridge calls a “Church of God Galactic,” would find its origins with science fiction literature (Bainbridge, “Religions for a Galactic Civilization“). In the formulation of his “Church,” Bainbridge used the scientistic cult of Scientology as a working model:

Today there exists one highly effective religion actually derived from science fiction, one which fits all the known sociological requirements for a successful Church of God Galactic. I refer, of course, to Scientology (Bainbridge, “Religions for a Galactic Civilization”).

In the Scientologist bible, L. Ron Hubbard’s Dianetics, one finds a reiteration of Comenius’ mission statement delivered to the “illuminati” (i.e., scientists). Hubbard states:

Man has something more: some people call it imagination, some call it this or call it that; but whatever it is called, it adds up to the interesting fact that man is not content merely to “face reality” as most other life forms are. Man makes reality face him. Propaganda about “the necessity of facing reality,” like propaganda to the effect that a man could be driven mad by a “childhood delusion” (whatever that is), does not face the reality that where the beaver down his ages of evolution built mud dams and keeps on building mud dams, man graduates in a half century from a stone and wood dam to make a mill wheel pond to structures like Grand Coulee Dam, and changes the whole and entire aspect of a respectable portion of nature’s real estate from a desert to productive soil, from a flow of water to lightening bolts (Hubbard, 308).

It is very interesting that Hubbard would cite the Grand Coulee Dam as an instant when man “made reality face him.” Discussing the “Saturnian-masonic” era of erecting megalithic structures, Hoffman observes:

Actually, with some crucial exceptions, the rise of the megaliths marked the rise of the Hermetic Academy into its dominant physical phase. The theory is that the megaliths “pin down” natural forces, helping to subdue nature’s most savage furies. We marvel today at the Hoover Dam but that symbol laden construction is but a crude parody of the technology of the megaliths which helped to “dam” the wildest forces of nature (Hoffman, 21).

Evidently, men like Hubbard and Bainbridge see something entirely different when they view structures like the Grand Coulee Dam and the Hoover Dam. They are viewing the “endpoint of techne — the mastery of matter.” It is the Technocracy’s project in consciously shaping the terrain of the global holodeck.

The “Hive Mind”

As was established in the previous article covering this topic, Darwin’s theory of evolution was cribbed liberally from Freemasonry’s occult doctrine of “becoming.” According to this doctrine, humanity was gradually evolving towards apotheosis. The architecture of Masonry’s evolutionary mythology is a counterpart to the Biblical account humanity’s expulsion from Eden. However, there are some major modifications. In The Meaning of Masonry, W.L. Wilmshurst alleges that:

In all Scriptures and cosmologies the tradition is universal of a “Golden Age,” an age of comparative innocence, wisdom and spirituality, in which racial unity [emphasis added], and individual happiness and enlightenment prevailed; in which there was that open vision for want of which a people perisheth, but in virtue of which men were once in conscious conversation with the unseen world and were shepherded, taught and guided by the “gods” or discarnate superintendents of the infant race, who imparted to them the sure and indefeasible principles upon which their spiritual welfare and evolution [emphasis added] depended (Wilmshurst, 173).

However, Wilmshurst contends that a peregrination of human consciousness away from the “racial mind” caused humanity to fall from its former glory:

The tradition is also universal of the collective soul
[emphasis added] of the human race having sustained a “fall,” a moral declension from its true path of life and evolution [emphasis added], which has severed it almost entirely from its creative source, and which, as the ages advanced, has involved its sinking more and more deeply into physical conditions, its splitting up from unity employing a single language into a diversity of conflicting races of different speeches and degrees of moral advancement
[emphasis added], accompanied by a progressive densification of the material body and a corresponding darkening of the mind and atrophy of the spiritual consciousness (Wilmshurst, 173).

Recall Pesce’s statement that techne was expressed in the modern world as the “collection of spirit.” This is precisely the objective of Masonry… the “collection of spirit” through the facilitation of evolution! Wilmshurst proceeds to reveal the chief means by which this will be achieved:

Unable to effect its [Man's] own recovery it required skilled scientific [emphasis added] assistance from other sources to bring about its restoration. Whence could come that skill and scientific [emphasis added] knowledge if not from the Divine and now invisible world, from those “gods” and angelic guardians of the erring race of whom all ancient traditions and sacred writings tell? Would not that regenerative method be properly described if it were called, as in Masonry it is called, a “heavenly science” [emphasis added], and welcomed in the words that Masons in fact use, “Hail, Royal Art!” (Wilmshurst, 175).

Can there be any wonder why Freemasons Aldous Huxley and H.G. Wells were proponents of a “scientific dictatorship?” It is an intrinsic feature of their Masonic heritage. This heritage led them to bestow absolute epistemological primacy upon Science, spelled with a “S” to denote its divine role in man’s purported ascent towards apotheosis and the reconstitution of the Masonic “collective soul.” This is scientism. In a speech before the Royal Institute of International Affairs in 1936, H.G. Wells succinctly expressed the core precept of scientism:

“At first the realization of the ineffectiveness of our best thought and knowledge struck only a few people, like Mr. Maynard Keynes, for example… It is science and not men of science that we want to enlighten and animate our politics and rule the world” (qutd. in Keith, Mind Control, WorldControl, 306 – 307).

Wells also wrote about the mythological “collective soul,” which he dubbed “The Mind of the Race.” W. Warren Wagar elaborates on Wells’ “racial mind” doctrine:

It was at once the capstone and the mortar of his [Wells'] faith: a belief in the emergence in human evolution of a collective racial being with the collective racial mind, which gathered the results of the individual mental effort into a single fund of racial wisdom and grew gradually toward organic consciousness of itself. Individuals could escape the frustration inherent in the fact of their individuality and mortality only by consecrating their lives to the service of the Mind of the Race (Wagar, 100 – 101).

Wells believed that the final coalescence of human consciousness into a “racial mind” would result in the emergence not of a mere man, but of perfected Man with a capitalized M (Wagar, 104). The M is capitalized to denote the purported divinity that is dormant within humanity. Wells’ Weltanschauung remained consistent with the Masonic themes of a “collective soul” and man’s evolutionary ascent towards deification. In H.G. Wells and the World State, author Warren Wagar elaborates:

But the transcendent reality Wells actually professed to see emerging here and now was the collective being of humanity, rather than any “God.” At the level of the individual the species Homo sapiens might be nothing more than a swarm of unique individuals descended in an unbroken sequence from remote protozoan ancestors; yet Homo sapiens was more than a name. At this moment in cosmic time it also denoted a class of similar if not identical individuals, evolving in ceaseless interaction with one another, and through the unique gift of speech able to pool their experiences and so give birth to a higher order of being entirely: a racial memory, a collective mind [emphasis added], the emergent intelligence of an emergent racial being (Wagar, 104).

According to Wells’ Weltanschauung, the ecumenical singularity into which humanity was being compressed by evolution would relegate the individual to obsolescence:

As Wells grew older, he tended to look at life more and more from the synthetic level of racial being and less and less from the analytical level of the individual. At the end of his spiritual pilgrimage he virtually accepted the realist argument that the whole is real and the individual an illusion (Wagar, 104).

William Sims Bainbridge may prove to be instrumental in the demise of the individual. In an article entitled “US report foretells of brave new world,” journalist Nathan Cochrane examines Converging Technologies for Improving Human Performance, a report edited and contributed to by Bainbridge:

A draft government report says we will alter human evolution [emphasis added] within 20 years by combining what we know of nanotechnology, biotechnology, IT and cognitive sciences. The 405-page report sponsored by the US National Science Foundation and Commerce Department, Converging Technologies for Improving Human Performance, calls for a broad-based research program to improve human performance leading to telepathy, machine-to-human communication, amplified personal sensory devices and enhanced intellectual capacity (Cochrane, 1).

Elaborating on this research program, Cochrane explains how this convergent-technologies plan would be instrumental in the unification of mass consciousness:

People may download their consciousnesses into computers or other bodies even on the other side of the solar system, or participate in a giant “hive mind”, a network of intelligences connected through ultra-fast communications networks. “With knowledge no longer encapsulated in individuals, the distinction between individuals and the entirety of humanity would blur,” the report says. “Think Vulcan mind-meld. We would perhaps become more of a hive mind – an enormous, single, intelligent entity” (Cochrane, 1).

Of course, preparations must be made for the humanity’s comfortable acclimation to this new “hive mind.” Cochrane writes:

The report says the abilities are within our grasp but will require an intense public-relations effort to “prepare key organisations and societal activities for the changes made possible by converging technologies”, and to counter concern over “ethical, legal and moral” issues. Education should be overhauled down to the primary-school level to bridge curriculum gaps between disparate subject areas (Cochrane, 1).

The “endpoint of techne” may be drawing nigh as the Technocracy constructs its global holodeck.

"Ancient" Artifacts Reveal UFOs and Aliens

A video on YouTube is attracting a lot of attention, which claims to display Ancient "artifacts containing pictures of ufos and wormholes, stargates in operation."
Unfortunately, there is no mention of dates or where these artifacts come from, although one comment has suggested that they are Mayan in nature "and most likely discovered in Mexico and or South America."
It has also been suggested that this video might be a taste of what will be revealed in a "2012 Documentary" which is due to be released later this year.
I have to say, if these artifacts are genuine, they are without doubt the most revealing evidence of aliens visiting this planet and the most stunning discovery of all time.
Check out the video for yourself and see what you think. There are clearly many images of UFOs, Aliens and Stargates and I even noticed a couple of "all seeing eyes".

However, as incredible as all this may seem, I feel I have to add a precautionary "BUT" to the proceedings.
As I watched the video I couldn`t help but notice that it contained images on a wide range of topics, and you can almost guarantee that someone watching this will find something that appeals to them. Is this just a coincidence, or did someone plan it that way? The video is almost like a webpage that contains a large number of "keywords`, which are designed to attract visitors searching with certain words (UFO, alien, stargate etc.)
One comment mentioned that these "artifacts" are specially made for the tourists and until their date can be verified, this may well be true. It might also explain why the images are so familiar to us, especially the one showing a Stargate (almost the same as the one from the film).
This is not the first time I have seen a "promotional stunt"  that follows the style of this video and they are quite effective. Millions of people are tempted into watching the documentary (the main purpose) and we later discover that the artifacts are indeed tourist items made a few weeks ago. Everyone involved is sorry and just as shocked as the rest of us at discovering the items were not genuine. The public are of course angry at being fooled, but quickly forget the incident and prepare for the next one.
With all the talk that December 2012 may prove to be a significant time for our planet (the end of the Mayan calendar), it is natural that people are keen to obtain whatever information they can on this subject. Whether we will experience an "End of Times" later this year remains to be seen, but if that is our destiny, there is very little we can do about it.

All I can say is that certain parts of South America do seem to reveal some potential contact with aliens and maybe some of this knowledge has been passed on in various ways. Were the Mayans told (by aliens) that something catastrophic would happen in 2012, hence the end of the calendar, or did the calendar simply reach the end of its current cycle?

If I was to make a bet on the outcome, I would say that we will still be here next year. However, we seem to have enough people (humans) on this planet keen on killing each other, so we can`t be sure of what the future might bring. Perhaps it would almost be a kindness if we did witness an "End of Times", as we don`t seem to deserve this beautiful planet and all that it provides.

Moyers: "The Secret Government is an interlocking network of official functionaries, spies, mercenaries, ex-generals, profiteers and superpatriots, who, for a variety of motives, operate outside the legitimate institutions of government. Presidents have turned to them when they can't win the support of the Congress or the people, creating that unsupervised power so feared by the framers of our Constitution. Just imagine that William Casey's dream came true. Suppose the enterprise grew into a super-secret, self-financing, self-perpetuating organization. Suppose they decided on their own to assassinate Gorbachev or the leader of white South Africa. Could a President control them and what if he became the enterprise's public enemy Number One? Who would know? Who would say no?"
"World War II was over. Europe lay devastated. The United States emerged as the most powerful nation on earth. But from the rubble rose a strange new world, a peace that was not peace, and a war that was not war. We saw it emerging when the Soviets occupied Eastern Europe. The Cold War had begun."

Moyers: "The Russians had been our ally against the Nazis, an expedient alliance for the sake of war. Now they were our enemy. To fight them we turned to some of the very men who had inflicted on humanity the horrors of Hitler's madness. We hired Nazis as American spies. We struck a secret bargain with the devil."
Erhard Dabringhaus: "One that I know real well is Klaus Barbie. He was wanted by the French as their number one war criminal, and somehow we employed a man like that as a very secretive informant."
Moyers: "Erhard Dabringhaus was employed in the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps and assigned to work with Nazi informants spying on the Russians. One of them was Klaus Barbie, the ‘Butcher of Lyon', who had tortured and murdered thousands of Jews and resistance fighters. The Americans did not turn Barbie over to the French when they finished with him. They helped him escape to Bolivia. Other top Nazis were smuggled into the United States to cooperate in the war against the new enemy."
"So began the morality of the Cold War. Anything goes. The struggle required a mentality of permanent war, a perpetual state of emergency. It had met a vast new apparatus of power that radically transformed our government. Its foundations were laid when President Truman signed into law the National Security Act of 1947."
Admiral Gene La Rocque: "Now that National Security Act of 1947 changed dramatically the direction of this great nation. It established the framework for a national security state."
Moyers: "Admiral Gene La Rocque rose through the ranks from Ensign to become a Strategic Planner for the Pentagon and now heads the Center of Defense Information, a public interest group."
Admiral Gene La Rocque: "The National Security Act of ‘47 gave us the National Security Council. Moyers: "This is the house the Cold War built – the CIA. The core of the new secret government. Its chief legitimate duty was to gather foreign intelligence for America's new role as a world power. Soon it was taking on covert operations, abroad and at home. As its mission expanded, the CIA recruited adventuresome young men like Notre Dame's 'All American,' Ralph McGehee."
Ralph McGehee: "I look back to the individual that I was when I joined the agency. I was a dedicated Cold Warrior who felt the agency was out there fighting for liberty, justice and democracy and religion around the world. And I believed wholeheartedly in this. I just felt proud every day that I went to work because I was out at the vanguard of the battle against the international evil empire – international Communist evil empire."
Moyers: "Iran, 1953: the CIA mounted its first major covert operation to overthrow a foreign government. The target was the Prime Minister of Iran, Mohammed Mosaddeq. He held power legitimately, through his country's parliamentary process, and he was popular. Washington had once looked to him as the man to prevent a Communist takeover. But that was before Mosaddeq decided that the Iranian state, not British companies, ought to own and control the oil within Iran's own borders. When he nationalized the British run oil fields, Washington saw red."
"The Secretary of State, John Foster Dulles and his brother Alan, Director of the CIA, decided with Eisenhower's approval, to overthrow Mosaddeq and reinstate the Shah of Iran. The mobs paid by the CIA, and the police and soldiers bribed by the CIA, drove Mosaddeq from office."
Newscaster: "Crown Prince Abdullah greets the Shah as he lands at Baghdad airport after a seven-hour flight from Rome."
Moyers: The King of Kings was back in control and more pliable than Mosaddeq. American oil companies took over almost half of Iran's production. U.S. arms merchants moved in with $18 billion of weapons sales over the next 20 years. But there were losers."
Kenneth Love (former New York Times reporter): "Nearly everybody in Iran of any importance has had a brother, or a mother, or a sister, or a son, or a father, tortured, jailed, deprived of property without due process. I mean an absolutely buccaneering dictatorship in our name that we supported. SAVAK was created by the CIA!"
Moyers: "SAVAK, the Shah's Secret Police, tortured and murdered thousands of his opponents. General Richard Secord and Albert Hakim were among those who helped supply the Shah's insatiable appetite for the technology of control. But the weapons and flattery heaped by America on the Shah blinded us to the growing opposition of his own people. They rose up in 1979 against him. "Death to the Shah!" they shouted. "Death to the American Satan."
Kenneth Love: "Khomeni is a direct consequence, and the hostage crisis is a direct consequence, and the resurgence of the Shi'a is a direct consequence of the CIA's overthrow of Mosaddeq in 1953."
Moyers: "Guatemala 1954. Flushed with success America's Secret Government decided another troublesome leader must go. This time it was Jacobo Arbenz, the democratically elected president of Guatemala. Philip Roettinger was recruited from the Marines to join the CIA team."
Colonel Philip Roettinger (Ret.) U.S. Marine Corps: "It was explained to me that it was very important for the security of the United States that we were going to prevent a Soviet beach-head in this hemisphere, which we have heard about very recently of course, and that the Guatemalan government was Communist, and we had to do something about it."
Moyers: "President Arbenz had admired Franklin D. Roosevelt and his government voted often with the American position at the United Nations. But in trying to bring a new deal to Guatemala, Arbenz committed two sins in the eyes of the Eisenhower administration. First, when he opened the system to all political parties he recognized the Communists too."
Roettinger: "Well, of course there was not even a hint of Communism in his government. He had no Communists in his Cabinet. He did permit the existence of a very small Communist party."
Moyers: "Arbenz also embarked on a massive land reform program. Less than 3 per cent of the land owners held more than 70 per cent of the land. So Arbenz nationalized more than 1 ½ million acres, including land owned by his own family and turned it over to peasants. Much of that land belonged to the United Fruit Company, the giant American firm that was intent on keeping Guatemala, quite literally, a banana republic. United Fruit appealed to its close friends in Washington, including the Dulles brothers, who said that Arbenz was openly playing the Communist game. He had to go."
Roettinger: "This was sudden death for him. There was no chance of him winning this fight because of the fact that he had done this to the United Fruit Company. Plus the fact, that he was overthrowing the hegemony of the United States over this area. And this was dangerous, it could not be tolerated. We couldn't tolerate that."
Moyers: "From Honduras, the same country that today is the Contra staging base, the CIA launched a small band of mercenaries against Guatemala. They were easily turned back. So with its own planes and pilots the CIA then bombed the capital. Arbenz fled and was immediately replaced by an American puppet, Colonel Carlos Castillo Armas."
Roettinger: "He overturned all of the reformist activities of President Arbenz. He gave the land back to the United Fruit Company that had been confiscated. He took land from the peasants and gave it back to the land owners."
Moyers: "The CIA had called its covert action against Guatemala, Operation Success. Military dictators ruled the country for the next 30 years. The United States provided them with weapons and trained their officers. The Communists we saved them from would have been hard pressed to do it better. Peasants were slaughtered. Political opponents were tortured. Suspected insurgents were shot, stabbed, burned alive or strangled. There were so many deaths at one point that coroners complained they couldn't keep up with the work load. Operation Success."
Roettinger: "What we did has caused a succession of repressive military dictatorships in that country and has been responsible for the deaths over 100,000 of their citizens."
Moyers: "Success breeds success, sometimes with dreary repetition. Mario Sandoval Alarcon began his career in the CIA's adventure in Guatemala. Today he's known as the Godfather of the Death Squads. In 1981, after lobbying Ronald Reagan's advisors for military aid to Guatemala, Sandoval Alarcon danced at the Inaugural Ball."
"Richard Bissell, another veteran of the Guatemalan coup, went on to become the CIA's Chief of Covert Operations. I looked him up several years ago for a CBS documentary. He talked about a secret report prepared for the White House in 1954 by a group of distinguished citizens headed by former president Herbert Hoover."
Report Quote: "It is now clear that we are facing an implacable enemy whose avowed objective is world domination. There are no rules in such a game. Hitherto accepted norms of human conduct do not apply. If the United States is to survive, longstanding American concepts of fair play must be reconsidered. We must learn to subvert, sabotage, and destroy our enemies by more clever, more sophisticated, more effective methods than those used against us."
Moyers: "Cuba, 1961, seven years after Operation Success in Guatemala, Bissell was planning another CIA covert operation."
Newscaster: "The assault has begun on the dictatorship of Fidel Castro."
Moyers: "On April 17, 1961, Cuban exiles trained by the CIA at a base in friendly Guatemala landed on the southern coast of Cuba, at the Bay of Pigs. The U.S. had promised air support, but President Kennedy cancelled it. The invaders, left defenseless, surrendered. Seven months after the disastrous invasion, Kennedy delivered a major foreign policy address."
President John F. Kennedy: "We cannot, as a free nation, compete with our adversaries in tactics of terror, assassination, false promises, counterfeit mobs and crisis."
Moyers: "The President was not telling the truth. Even as he spoke, his administration was planning a new covert war on Cuba. It would include some of the dirty tricks the President said we were above. The Secret Government was prepared for anything."
Moyers interview with Richard Bissel: "At one time, the CIA organized a small department known as Executive Action, which was a permanent assassination capability."
Bissel: "Well, it wasn't just an assassination capability. It was a capability to discredit or get rid of people, but it could have included assassination."
Moyers: "And it did. There were at least eight documented attempts to kill Castro. He says there were two dozen. And there was even one effort to put LSD in his cigars. To help us get rid of the Cuban leader, our Secret Government turned to the Mafia, just as we once made use of Nazis. The gangsters included the Las Vegas Mafioso, John Roselli, the Don of Chicago, Sam Giancana, and the Boss of Tampa, Santo Traficante."
"If I read you correctly you are saying it is the involvement in the Mafia that disturbed you and not the need or decision to assassinate a foreign leader."
Bissel: "Correct."
Moyers: "It is a chilling thought made more chilling by the assassination of John Kennedy. The accusations linger. In some minds, the suspicions persist of a dark unsolved conspiracy behind his murder. You can dismiss them, as many of us do. But knowing now what our secret government planned for Castro, the possibility remains. Once we decide that anything goes, anything can come home to haunt us."

Eisenhower warned that the nations of Southeast Asia would fall like dominoes if the Communists, led by Ho Chi Min, took over all Vietnam. To hold the line, we installed in Saigon a puppet regime under Ngo Dinh Diem. American-trained commandoes were used to sabotage bus and rail lines and contaminate North Vietnam's oil supply. Vice President Nixon lent moral support to Diem, but the situation kept getting worse."
"President Kennedy sent the Green Berets to Vietnam and turned to full scale counter-insurgency. He had once said that Vietnam was the ultimate test of our will to stem the tide of world Communism. By the time of his death, there were 15,000 Americans there. They were called "advisors." The secret war was leading only to deeper involvement and more deception."
President Lyndon Johnson: "It is my duty to the American people to report that renewed hostile actions against United States ships on the high seas in the Gulf of Tonkin have today required me to order the military forces of the United States, to take action and reply."
Moyers: "This President was not telling the truth either. The action at the Gulf of Tonkin was not unprovoked. South Vietnam had been conducting secret raids in the area against the North and the American destroyer, ordered into the battle zone, had advanced warning it could be attacked. But Johnson seized the incident to stampede Congress into passing the Gulf of Tonkin resolution. He then used it as a blank check for the massive buildup of American forces."
"April, 1965: Two battalions of Marines land in South Vietnam. The first of more than 2½ million Americans to fight there with no Congressional declaration of war. The dirty little war that began in secret, is reaching full roar. Free-fire zones, defoliation, the massacre at My Lai, napalm, and the CIA's Operation Phoenix to round up, torture and kill suspected Viet Cong."
Ralph McGehee: "We were murdering these people, incinerating them."
Moyers: "Ralph McGehee was there for the CIA and helped set up South Vietnam's secret police."
McGehee (Notre Dame "All American"): "My efforts had resulted in the deaths of many people, and I just – for me it was a period when I guess I was – I considered myself nearly insane – I just couldn't reconcile what I had been and what I was at the time becoming."
Moyers: "Many of the secret warriors in Southeast Asia had no such doubts or regrets. Some of the team that later joined the Iran-Contra enterprise, helped to run the secret war in Laos. As General Richard Secord later put it, 'Laos belonged to the CIA.' Looking back, it is stunning how easily the Cold War enticed us into surrendering popular control of government to the National Security State. We've never come closer to bestowing absolute authority on the president. Setting up White House groups that secretly decide to fight dirty little wars, is a direct assumption of the war powers expressly forbidden by the Constitution."
"Not since December, 1941, has Congress declared war. Since then, we've had a police action in Korea, advisors in Vietnam, covert operations in Central America, peacekeeping in Lebanon and low intensity conflicts going on right now from Angola to Cambodia. We've turned the war powers of the United States over to, well we're never really sure who, or what they're doing, or what it costs, or who is paying for it. The one thing that we are sure of is that this largely secret global war carried on with less and less accountability to democratic institutions, has become a way of life. And now we are faced with a question brand new in our history. Can we have the permanent warfare state and democracy too?"
"In 1975 as the war in Vietnam came to an end, Congress took its first public look at the Secret Government. Senator Frank Church chaired the Select Committee to study government operations. The hearings opened the books on a string of lethal activities. From the use of electric pistols and poison pellets, to Mafia connections and drug experiments. And they gave us a detailed account of assassination plots against foreign leaders and the overthrowing of sovereign governments. We learned, for example, how the Nixon administration had waged a covert war against the government of Chile's president, Salvador Allende, who was ultimately overthrown by a military coup and assassinated."
Senator Church: "Like Caesar peering into the colonies from distant Rome, Nixon said the choice of government by the Chileans was unacceptable to the president of the United States. The attitude in the White House seemed to be – if in the wake of Vietnam, I can no longer send in the Marines, then I will send in the CIA."
Moyers: "The powers claimed by presidents and national security have become the controlling wheel of government, driving everything else. Secrecy then makes it possible for the president to pose as the sole competent judge of what will best protect our security. Secrecy permits the White House to control what others know, and that's power."
"This is the ultimate weapon of the secret government – the National Security Decision Directive – the NSDD. Every president since Harry Truman has issued them. They're not published in any government register. Ronald Reagan has signed at least 280 such directives. They cover everything from outer space to nuclear weapons to covert operations in Iran and Nicaragua. In essence, by an arbitrary and secret decree, the president can issue himself a license to do as he will, where he will. And the only ones who need to know are the secret agents who carry it out – the knights of the Oval Office."
"This remains for me the heart of the matter. The men who wrote our Constitution, our basic book of rules, were concerned that power be held accountable. No party of government and no person in government, not even the President, was to pick or choose among the laws to be obeyed. But how does one branch of government blow the whistle on another? Or how do the people cry foul when their liberties are imperiled, if public officials can break the rules, lie to us about it, and then wave the wand of national security to silence us?"
"Can it happen again? You bet it can. The apparatus of secret power remains intact in a huge White House staff operating in the sanctuary of presidential privilege. George Bush has already told the National Security Council to take more responsibility for foreign policy, which can of course be exercised beyond public scrutiny. And a lot of people in Washington are calling for more secrecy, not less, including more covert actions. This is a system easily corrupted as the public grows indifferent again, and the press is seduced or distracted. So one day, sadly, we are likely to discover once again that while freedom does have enemies in the world, it can also be undermined here at home, in the dark, by those posing as its friends.
