26^th January 2011 Public Notice to Heads of State To whom this presents shall come: greeting! In upholding the highest traditions of English Civilization, this letter gives notice to Your Excellencies, that the Global Settlement Foundation (GSF), is an independent and sovereign organization that provides finality of settlement for global trade. Common law notice of our intent and claim of right¹ was hand delivered to Buckingham Palace on 20^th August 2010, including an invitation to Her Majesty to issue lawful money, uphold common law, and thus restore the inherent sovereignty of man, as proclaimed by the Magna Carta, the root of Dignity and Majesty of the English Crown. When the affidavit of John Harris² was published, a cry went out to the English speaking world for assistance in restoring common law, the law of the land, and to take steps to free people entrapped by certain powers, including perhaps, Her Majesty the Queen. Clearly, great dangers await mankind and the British Monarchy, if, today, not one nation on Earth can demonstrate that it upholds the principles of the said charter and lawfully affirm it. The Global Isles Court of Record is in motion regarding this matter. The Global Standard™, an open public standard for the issuance of lawful money, defines a gold Global™ as 0.1 gram by mass of 0.999 fine or better purity gold and a silver Isle™ as 0.1 gram by mass of 0.999 fine or better purity silver. All circulating notes and coins shall at all times contain at least 70% of the face value of the instrument with 100% of face value deliverable in kilo bars at all times. A sophisticated database system ensures that a clear lawful title can be established to all gold and silver held by the Global Settlement Foundation and remains fully deliverable at all times for any claims that may arise. Given the appalling state of affairs, as a matter of standard procedure, all gold that is delivered into or out of this system will be assayed for purity in full without any exception for all time to come. It is now possible with advanced technology to put minute, accurately measured quantities of gold into the circulating instruments. Each instrument can then be verified as genuine as to the exact amount of gold in each. In a reversal of the old reasons against circulating gold as money, it is the small denominations that will be notes, the larger amounts being coins. Physical coins for trade will begin as G 400 (approx. 1,125.00 GBP today) and notes down to G 0.01 (that is, down to 1p in value, around 3p at today's gold price). Who we are not and what interests us We are not connected with, or sponsored by, any government, bank, banker or intelligence agency. All those entering the GSF System will have to declare that their source of funds is free of fraud and crimes against humanity. We are interested in common law and lawful, deliverable money and true markets that feature finality of settlement. Facts and questions before the Court of Record The Global Isles Court of Record is a true sovereign court as designed by the Magna Carta where the court operates with no legislative presumptions, where the tribunal is independent of the magistrate, with jurisdiction to determine if the fiduciary trust towards the people that is held by the government and its instrumentalities, the banks and courts, has been breached. The Global Isles Court of Record has raised issues regarding the current system of banking which are pertinent to examination of the source-of-funds for all transactions. Fraudulent finance

1. Bank fraud, fraudulent deception, fraudulent conversion and running of limitations by banks in general, which result in a system where the notes on deposit at the banks are the promissory notes of the borrower, where the banks do not risk funds, and the banks are the borrowers of the money-of-account in circulation; and,
   
2. How, by design, when the banks 'stop lending', the total quantity of the money-of-account in circulation plunges³, creating a 'financial crisis'; and,
   
3. How, by design, it is guaranteed that the so-called 'borrowers' will 'default' while the true borrower, the bank, gets to take all the property; and,
   
4. How, by design, such a financial crisis ensures that private property is transferred by deception to bank insiders, how stocks of 'public' and private corporations become 'bankrupted' enabling wholesale transfer of assets to those suitable ready with the spoils of bank fraud; and,
   
5. How, by design, the auction of government bonds amount to an exchange of bank-liabilities to pay legal tender for the government's future liability to pay legal tender, and how a “bailout” amounts to outright transfer of liabilities from one balance sheet to another funded by confiscation of private property that is taxation; and,
   
6. How, by design, the central bank earns these government bonds, and pledges this as collateral for the printing of legal-tender “cash”; and,
   
7. How, thus, by design, it is impossible for banks to pay legal tender for the total quantity of bank-liabilities to pay paper legal tender.
   
8. This raises the question as to who has granted the charter of the central bank, who owns the shares, and the fiduciary responsibilities of such. It also raises the question if insiders to these institutions have used off balance sheet entities to sequester bank-liabilities in circulation by extra-legal methods.
   
9. This raises the question if the so-called drug war is an artifice to remove the cash liabilities of a certain central bank from within the 'nation' under their control and further questions as to what this cash has been used to fund once laundered through the banks of other 'nations'. Is the charter of this central bank a 99 year charter?
   
10. This raises the question of if the entire system can be reduced to a system of void-contracts, where the law of voids would apply to the situation.

The Global Isles Court of Record has also raised questions as to who can claim to represent the men and women on the land:

1. How, by incorporation, the so-called nations and even members of parliament or congress are really private corporations; and,
   
2. How, by acts ultra vires, “government” corporations create a pyramid of currency based on deceiving the retail 'borrower' into depositing money-of-account into circulation; and,
   
3. How, by examination of a government's money, one can determine if a government is at war, vanquished, or at peace. Thus raising the question if Your Excellencies' government is at war or is vanquished? It is evident that every government on the planet is either vanquished or at war. If Your Excellencies' government is at war, with whom? If it has been vanquished, by whom?

MEET SHERLOCK HOLMES

If you see a fellow that could be just hanging around at the time of the next mistake - after all we all make mistakes and half the time they slide by unwitnessed. Sherlock Holmes noticed though. He noticed irregularities. He was that sort of guy. When we think of Sherlock Holmes we all see the icon. In many cases, though it misrepresents the original, the icon is schooled in to society and like the disney version of a story it overtakes the real one. And what is society if not we ourselves? Elementary eh? The obvious, in plain sight, is that Sherlock had another sense – some call it common sense – or the sense of accessing genius. He is fascinating in as far as we are fascinated by it. And we are. It is aided by seeing and hearing in the first place what you behold. It's more than just focusing and listening. It is some sort of sense of how more dots join. We all have it . It's clear that we all have the genius of the common sense. It is indeed elementary - that's down to the original elements. So there in his museum in Baker Street lies Sherlock Holmes kit and much strange paraphernalia. All his bits and pieces were top level tools - a bit James Bondy. His false hair could turn him into an old man in a twinkling. It is always easier to see what is in front of us than to notice that which is missing – at first. Both these old men could be the appearance of Sherlock Holmes. All that dangles before our eyes we see with a sliver of our entire consciousness. We see the new cars on the roads, we see the latest clothes on other people, we see ads. What don't we see? What we behold – what is there – plain to see and hear in the the genius sense. Here is a well known story: Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson are camping on an assignment. waiting for the unexpected, the unknown, and pitches their tent under the stars. During the night, Holmes wakes his companion and says: "Watson, look up at the stars, and tell me what you can deduce." Watson says: "I see millions of stars, and even if a few of those have planets, it's quite likely there are some planets like Earth, and if there are a few planets like Earth out there, there might also be intelligent aliens." Sherlock looked back at him with amazement and replied, "We are lying on the ground currently safe from rain as there are stars above instead of canvas, from which I deduce that somebody has stolen our tent". Back to the Baker Street museum. His disguise tools mean that Sherlock often went out looking like this, and this, and this.

MEET ISAAC NEWTON

Sir Isaac Newton Challenges Money Fraud

In some ways Sir Isaac Newton was a Sherlock Holmes kind of a guy. His keen observation, powers of deduction and relentless persistence is not so lauded as the cartoon apple story which is his icon. Like Sherlock Holmes he frequented taverns and the haunts of questionable persons in disguise.  He set himself up as a private detective, collecting evidence on the ring of fraudsters who, then as now, met with accomplices over a drink. He achieved something people are killed for nowadays, by more sophisticated and learned criminals. He caught some money thieves red handed and had them hung, drawn and quartered. I can tell you now I never learnt that at school. He took up the position of warden of the Royal Mint in 1696, obtained through the patronage of Charles Montagu, 1st Earl of Halifax, Chancellor of the Exchequer. He took charge of England's great re-coining of 1696, In 1699 he became Master of the Mint a position Newton took seriously, exercising his power to reform the currency and punish clippers and counterfeiters. He estimated that 20 percent of the coins taken in during The Great Recoinage were counterfeit. Many eminent people had their hands in the Royal till. Counterfeiting is high treason and in Isaac Newton's time was punished by the perpetrator being hung drawn and quartered. Hence convicting even the most flagrant criminals was difficult because they were very rich or in a rich man's gang. They simply paid witnesses to keep quiet and lie. As it is is today. William Chaloner the head of operations at the time also falsely accused and libeled people as religious and criminal perverts thus terrorising them to cooperate.  Despite all the barriers placed to prosecution, English law had ancient and formidable customs of authority. It still does, despite our schooling that it does not. In one of Newton's cases as as a Justice of the Peace he appointed himself the King's attorney against William Chaloner. Chaloner's crimes, including setting up phony Catholic conspiracies and then turning in the entrapped conspirators, was such a money spinner that he was able to posture as landed gentry. He then accused the Royal Mint of providing tools to counterfeiters (a charge also made by others) and proposed that he be allowed to inspect the Mint's processes in order to improve them. He petitioned Parliament to adopt his plans for a coinage that could not be counterfeited, while at the same time striking false coins and circulating them. Newton finally succeeded in putting Chaloner on trial for counterfeiting and had him sent to Newgate Prison in September 1697 and two years later he was hung drawn and quartered. It was said of him by a biographer: 'Scorning the 'petty Rogueries of Tricking single Men', he aimed rather at 'imposing upon a whole Kingdom' Newton conducted more than 100 cross-examinations of witnesses, informers, and suspects, on the conclusive evidence from his investigations between June 1698 and Christmas 1699. He successfully prosecuted 28 coiners. Again, this is something modern day school curricula pass over. His science discoveries were mighty and many of those are not on school agendas either. We are schooled only in the dates of events to do with battles and promotions for example Newton was made President of the Royal Society in 1703. 1717 in the "Law of Queen Anne" Newton moved the Pound Sterling de facto from the silver standard to the gold standard by setting the bimetallic relationship between gold coin and the silver penny in favour of gold. During the 20 years from his involvement as sinecure warden of the Mint - he succeeded, with cooperation from the Privy Council, in cleaning up the money and starting England on the road of financial stability for 100 years until the effects of going off the Gold Standard in 1813 resulted in the outbreak of a war that is still being conducted in financial terms.  This he achieved, among many other things, on the foundation of common law. What's this got to do with Sherlock Holmes? It's just a matter of joining the dots. Money is wrongly tagged as the root of all evil. It is a famous biblical mis-quote . The real quote from the King James Bible is ...'For the love of money is the root of all evil'. It is not the foremost thought of a housewife who's buying vegetables for her family. It is lying and stealing for money that's evil. Don't blame the money - sue the perpetrators of evil. Sherlock described his arch enemy Moriarty as follows in "The Final Problem": "He is a man of good birth and excellent education, endowed by nature with a phenomenal mathematical faculty. ...... But the man had hereditary tendencies of the most diabolical kind. A criminal strain ran in his blood, which, instead of being modified, was increased and rendered infinitely more dangerous by his extraordinary mental powers.......He is the Napoleon of Crime, Watson, the organiser of half that is evil and nearly all that is undetected in this great city..."           Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A dark cloud hangs over these passages especially as it could describe both the loud mouthed Chaloner and the shadowy criminal minds at large in our day. There is nothing wrong with money per se - the problem is rooted in the minds of men when they use the very existence of money to make more if it for their own gains at the expense of the men and women who created it - by means of fraud and plunder. We are schooled that this is inevitable and unalterable in human nature. We have come to understand by the use of daily repeating, that lying, stealing, torturing and killing have to be tolerated or we might all lose our jobs - then what would we do? Both Sherlock Holmes and Isaac Newton spent their lives in pursuit of the truth. Malum quo communius eo pejus. (The more common the evil, the worse). Malus usus est abolendus. (An evil custom is to be abolished). Both in fact and fiction it is seen that one man can do much to sort the mess out. In just a few weeks, some kind of UFO-related secrets will be revealed at a Smithsonian Institution affiliated museum.
That's the implied promise in the title of a special lecture coming up at the National Atomic Testing Museum in Las Vegas on Sept. 22.
The secrets haven't yet been revealed, but the players involved certainly present the potential for something intriguing to emerge from this one-night event that's part of the museum's ongoing Area 51 lecture series.

"We looked at bringing in some people to talk about extraterrestrials and UFOs," said museum CEO and executive director Allan Palmer, a highly decorated former Air Force and Navy combat jet fighter.
"We wanted to concentrate on people who had personal stories and exposure to what they thought were real UFOs from the military side, because they might have just a little more credibility than your average Joe," Palmer told The Huffington Post.
"We looked at bringing in some people to talk about extraterrestrials and UFOs," said museum CEO and executive director Allan Palmer, a highly decorated former Air Force and Navy combat jet fighter.

Four of the participants had previous American military security clearances:
Ret. Army Col. John Alexander: Former military insider who created Advanced Theoretical Physics -- a group of top-level government officials and scientists brought together to study UFOs.
Ret. Air Force Col. Charles Halt: Former base commander of the RAF Bentwaters military base in England and vital eyewitness to the amazing UFO-related events at Rendlesham Forest in December 1980, where he believed the observed UFOs were extraterrestrial in origin.
Ret. Air Force Col. William Coleman: Former USAF bomber pilot, chief of Air Force public information and producer of NBC's "Project UFO" series.
Ret. Air Force Col. Robert Friend: Former director of the Air Force's Project Blue Book from 1958 to 1963.
The fifth guest at the museum's upcoming UFO lecture is former U.K. UFO desk officer Nick Pope.

What's going to be different about this one-time lecture compared to previous gatherings where military personnel have stepped forward to reveal details about personal UFO experiences?
"One of the things that is different is that you have high credibility vetted sources," Alexander told HuffPost. "What you're getting from this panel are people who have worked with the military, all of whom certainly agree that UFOs are real, and I think most of them would say it ought to be researched.
"Here, you're getting a small number [of participants], but high credibility people."
At the Sept. 22 lecture, Pope will speak of the similarities between how the U.K. and U.S. governments had similar UFO study groups and why both countries officially got out of the UFO business.

- by Deanna Spingola, 25 August 2010 In 1926, General Cherep-Spiridovich wrote, “War is only a ‘legalized mass murder.’ Thus Christ pointed out those who arrange all wars and revolutions, and that their chief cause is Satan and his sons’ ‘lust of murder.’ But ‘Christians’ never seem to agree with Christ.”¹ Gandhi concurred when he said, “Everyone but Christians understands that Jesus was nonviolent.” Those who “arrange all wars,” are typically among the very top echelon of secret societies, often Illuminati front groups like Skull and Bones, many of whom serve in elected and unelected government positions. Government officials implement a dark agenda of terrorism and genocide through directives developed by members of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) the Bilderberg (BB), and the Trilateral Commission (TC). Some may view these allegations as incredible conspiracy theories, which is exactly the perspective that the media-managing elites encourage in order to conceal their reprehensible operations and their true loyalties. General Cherep-Spiridovich said that those who arrange wars have a “lust of murder.” They also demonstrate a lust for power and profit, made possible by government-sanctioned warfare, funded by privately owned central banks which print billions of debt-based, interest-laden dollars, debt that is passed off onto the citizens who also fight and die in those wars. The increased glut of cash into the market devalues the currency already in circulation and further jeopardizes the country’s diminishing economy. The malevolent, parasitical bankers achieve their objectives by funding power-hungry, often psychopathic, well-compensated politicians who accommodate the bankers at the expense of the citizens they claim to represent. Representative government ends when the polls close. Christians have been persuaded to accept what Christ long ago disdained and warned against – usury. Citizens are manipulated into participating in war. Essentially, in accepting pro-war propaganda, we abandon Christianity and acquiesce to the mass slaughter of strangers targeted by the warmongers. In effect, we idolatrously “worship the golden calf” of the banker-backed, man-made state when we abandon the peaceful tenets of Christianity. If double-minded individuals, either naively or knowingly, promote war while claiming to abhor abortion, we absolutely must evaluate their motives and loyalties and then withhold our support for warfare. In Christianity, there should be no fence sitting, no serving of two masters. The Ten Commandments include “You shall have no other gods before me” and “You shall not murder (kill).” Communists and Socialists, who like Lucifer, are rebellious towards God, attempt to replace Him and impose their own laws upon the naïve masses. An authoritative state advocates, with numerous deceitful justifications, mass murder through warfare, actually genocide of entire foreign populations. Like Lucifer, since Lincoln’s War, the war planners always shift the blame for the initiation of warfare onto others via the use of false flag operations. The highly skilled war planners choreograph or aggressively provoke an attack and then call for a retaliatory strike against the people they attribute the attack to. From the shots fired at Fort Sumter, the explosion on the USS Maine, the sinking of the Lusitania, the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Tonkin incident, and numerous attacks on various U.S. embassies, there have been managed assaults. One of the major functions of the CIA is to create chaos in other countries – just so the U.S. can justify sending in military troops to restore order. That is how the deceitful war planners get our support; we believe that we are valiantly defending our country. Christians should be the first to recognize the probability of secret societies or secret combinations and money interests that are so intent on depriving others of their liberty, life and property. Christ’s death, though redemptive, was the result of a currency conspiracy. There were also plots to kill Paul and other disciples. Early day “public relations” provocateurs skillfully influenced the pliable masses in order to execute their covert agenda – remember, the loving admirers who bowed before Christ upon His entry into Jerusalem, were the exact same people who, a few days later, clamored for His death. What changed? The moneychangers, the same greedy people who sold the over-priced sacrificial animals in the temple courtyard, would have lost their future profits if people accepted His rational teachings on usury and the charitable cessation of the exploitation of others. After all, we work for our sakes, not to have others confiscate the product of our labors. Government education spawns battalions of potential soldiers who are willing to die “for their country.” Eager soldiers have been advantageously and subtly prepared through compelling peer pressure participation in Pentagon-designed video games that have been commercially marketed as entertainment. Dutiful teachers working within the federally controlled educational system regularly memorialize the vilest, most warmongering politicians of the past. This subtle programming is supported by a controlled media which has been licensed and regulated by the federal government (FCC) since the 1920s. The international bankers, who profit most from warfare, have controlled the entertainment and documentary media for decades. Media moguls, often in conjunction with the Pentagon, produce movies that glorify war, promote immorality, immodesty and profanity, all in an effort to subtly shape our opinions, alter our culture and persuade us to abandon traditional Christian values. If Christians forfeit so-called small ideals, they are more likely to relinquish Christ’s prohibition against warfare. Prior to the U.S. entering World War II, the influential media vilified anti-war activists by characterizing them as unpatriotic, Nazi and anti-Semitic. They were portrayed as un-American traitors.² These psychologically devised tactics were created by Edward Bernays, the nephew of Sigmund Freud and are still employed today to discourage dissent and immobilize inquiry. Anti-war activists and dissidents are allowed airtime with super-skilled radio and television hosts whose sole purpose is to repudiate the ideas of their guests, ridicule the truth, and castigate candidates who question U.S. foreign policy. These tactics are designed to produce a herd mentality within the population. Individuals reconsider their rhetoric when they see others discredited for similar views and remain silent. These devices, which discredit individuals and information, also discourage others from examining certain events and circumstances for themselves. International bankers, without particular national loyalties or regard for those used as cannon fodder, typically fund both sides of every war and often have major investments in, or outright ownership of, ammunition production facilities. Guaranteed contracts for tons of one-time-use bullets and bombs are tremendously more lucrative than selling cars and washing machines to consumers. Henry Kissinger, one-time U.S. Secretary of State said, “Military men are just dumb, stupid animals to be used as pawns for foreign policy.”³ Given the manner in which individual governments exploit soldiers to enrich the bankers, those troops are evidently expendable. Their bloodied bodies create massive profits for the international bankers, the original advocates of globalism, acquired through warfare, usually followed by sanctions, reparations and finally obedience to an international entity. A nation uses warfare to impose its policies on another nation. Gutele Schnapper Rothschild, the wife of Mayer A. Rothschild, who grew enormously wealthy by collecting usury while funding the European wars, said, “If my sons did not want wars, there would be none.” One might add “grandsons, great grandsons and other male relatives and all of their banking affiliates camouflaged under numerous names – Goldman Sachs, Lehman, Kuhn-Loeb, Citibank and others.” While Mother Rothschild sounded decidedly cold-hearted, other Talmudic Judaics, like the contemporary Rabbi Haim Druckman, a leader of the Religious Zionist movement, said on September 7, 2004, “Killing enemy civilians during war is normal.” Druckman and other like-minded Zionists view gentiles and even their own Semitic kinsmen, the Palestinians, including children, as sub-humans. The Talmud states, “Our lives come first.” Druckman ridiculed Christian opposition to warfare, “The Christian preaching of ‘turning the other cheek’ doesn’t concern us, and we will not be impressed by those who prefer the lives of our enemies to our lives.”⁴ And who is the enemy – any country that resists the international banker’s insistence on installing a central bank within their country. Further, banker-backed corporations target, confiscate and profit from the seizure and control of the natural resources in the said enemy’s land. Many Christians, indoctrinated to believe that there is such a thing as a “good war,” have unwittingly accepted barbaric total war tactics regarding unarmed women and children, and are perfectly willing to engage in mass slaughter at the behest of the bankers. Lenin (Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov), a Bolshevik said, “The establishment of a central bank is 90% of communizing a nation.”⁵ The way to get the U.S. to incrementally embrace communism began in 1913 with the establishment of the privately owned Federal Reserve. The massively wealthy owners of the Federal Reserve would ultimately invest in and sit on the boards of every major corporation and eventually capture the majority of America’s wealth in addition to usury, burdensome taxation and continual warfare. International Communism, adapted for expediency, was a means of brutal seizure of control, a perfect political mechanism for the international bankers. If people objected to tyranny, they were sent to slave labor camps or were quickly killed and silenced. Lenin and Trotsky (Lev Davidovich Bronstein) were divided on one issue – Lenin supported violent revolution while Trotsky favored a non-violent, intellectual approach to total government control.⁶ Lenin maintained, “The best way to control the opposition is to lead it ourselves.” In America, the bankers control the left and the right paradigm, the conservatives and the liberals, the Democrats and the Republicans. American Trotskyites, who prefer intellectual infiltration, seized the “conservative” label and continue to promote their agenda through numerous “conservative” groups. They manipulate and publicly promote certain religious leaders who then endorse that same agenda. The Trotskyites fund influential, noble named think tanks and regularly appear in the media. Americans are aghast when they hear about the millions of Chinese and Russian citizens who have been slaughtered by their Communist masters. Yet, under the federally sanctioned abortion laws, approximately fifty million people have been eliminated under the intellectual guise of “freedom of choice.” The ultimate abortion decision was fueled by the CIA-funded women’s movement. Steinem and the others were well paid to pretend concern for the rights of women while ignoring the rights of infants. So rather than Lenin’s depopulation method, the U.S. used Trotsky’s more subtle process. The results are the same. Contemporary Neo-cons William “Bill” Kristol and Robert Kagan established the Project for a New American Century, which called for a “new Pearl Harbor” in order to implement momentous change and to conduct Middle East warfare. Kristol’s late father, Irving Kristol who was often funded by the CIA, is known as the “godfather of neo-conservatism.” His organization promotes warfare (revolution), first in Iraq and now in Iran. Charles Krauthammer and Kristol, editor of the Rupert Murdoch-funded The Weekly Standard, the official voice of this cabal,⁷ and their Neo-con cronies provide opposition to the left agenda, as suggested by Lenin. On September 18, 2002, Kristol claimed that a war in Iraq “could have terrifically good effects throughout the Middle East.”⁸ Krauthammer and Kristol regularly appear on pro-Israel Murdoch’s “fair and balanced” Fox News where they allege that Iran is building nuclear weapons, a subtle form of their previous allegations about Iraqi’s weapons of mass destruction. Murdoch has always been a Rothschild family asset. On February 17, 2003, Krauthammer, a prominent Washington Post columnist writing in Time admitted that America’s imminent war against Iraq “is not just to disarm Saddam. It is to reform a whole part of the world…What the U.S. needs in the Arab world is not an exit strategy but an entry strategy. Iraq is the beckoning door…” Krauthammer further targeted “Iran, Saudi Arabia, Syria and beyond” as part of the neo-conservative war policy. On February 18, 2003, as reported in the Israeli newspaper, Ha’aretz, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon suggested that the U.S. wage war on Iran, Libya and Syria after “the successful destruction of Iraq.”⁹ Krauthammer, a former psychiatrist has called for an all-out U.S. war against the Muslim world.¹⁰ War is the most effective way of bankrupting a nation and to set it up for total collapse and a tyrannical takeover. The warfare in the Middle East is not in the best interests of America – it only serves the international bankers. On March 17, 2003, just before the U.S. invaded Iraq, Kristol, in his editorial in The Weekly Standard, wrote, “obviously, we are gratified that the Iraq strategy we have long advocated . . . has become the policy of the U.S. government.” On March 18, The Washington Post clarified his obvious influence when their columnist, Richard Cohen, referred to the impending conflict as “Kristol’s War” and prior to the “shock and awe” bombing of Baghdad, “this would seem to be Kristol’s moment.”¹¹ Millionaires and billionaires buy up politicians. Those who defy the bankers suffer dire consequences, like Charles A. Lindbergh, whose grandson was kidnapped and murdered. Lindbergh had written articles of impeachment for high crimes and misdemeanors against five members of the Federal Reserve Board, W. P. G. Harding, Paul M. Warburg, Frederick Delano, Adolf C. Miller and Charles S. Hamlin. Louis T. McFadden, another defiant Congressman died as a result of poisoning, their third attempt to eliminate him. Other non-compliant politicians are run out of office, assassinated, arrested, die in airplane crashes, are impeached or publicly humiliated. U.S. politicians understandably fear the international bankers more than they fear the wrath of their disgruntled constituents. Author R. Duane Willing, in his book Money: the 12th & Final Religion, claims that Richard M. Nixon, once compliant, fell from grace when he attempted to alter the nation’s money system and develop an interest-free Greenback-style currency which would have immobilized the national debt and obliterated the curse of usury. In 1969, Nixon appointed Dr. Preston Martin as Chairman and Chief Operating Officer of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board. Martin allegedly masterminded Nixon’s currency plan which would have converted 4,950 Savings and Loans into full commercial banks with the capacity of issuing checking accounts. This would have created a nationwide banking network outside of the auspices of the Federal Reserve network.¹² Austrian-born Arthur F. Burns (Burnseig), chairman of the Federal Reserve (1970-1978), had offices on the 8th floor of the Watergate Apartment Hotel. On June 17, 1972, five husky Watergate burglars were apprehended on the 6th floor after they had carried heavy files from Burns’ office down to the 6th floor for photographing.¹³ Allegedly, the burglars had broken into the Democratic National Committee headquarters, a convenient cover story. However, Martin was apparently promised the future chairmanship of the Federal Reserve if he abandoned Nixon and the populist currency plan that would have ended the power of the Federal Reserve. Nixon was purged from the presidency by a media-driven frenzy and forced to resign on August 9, 1974.¹⁴ He was later pardoned by Ford, probably on the basis of his continued silence about the real details surrounding the Watergate break-in. Martin didn’t replace Paul A. Volcker (CFR, TC, and BB) as chairman (1979-1987). Instead, Alan Greenspan was appointed as Chairman of the Federal Reserve. Burns (CFR) suggested that a review board be established to evaluate wage and price freezes.¹⁵ Nixon’s handlers created a comprehensive New Deal, Democratic-style strategy called the New Economic Policy after clandestine consultations at Camp David with George P. Shultz (CFR), Burns, Paul W. McCracken (CFR), Caspar W. Weinberger (CFR, TC), H.R. Haldeman, John Ehrlichman, Peter G. Peterson (CFR), Volcker, John Connally and Speechwriter Bill Safire. Volcker initiated the collapse of the U.S. economy. He has, since 1952, as an economist for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, influenced U.S. economic policies. In 1962 he became the director of financial analysis at the Treasury Department and in 1963 he was appointed as deputy under-secretary for monetary affairs. He returned to the Treasury as under-secretary (1969-1974) where he promoted international solutions to monetary problems. The House of Rothschild continues to influence the U.S. economy and domestic and foreign policies. Volcker, after having served as the Federal Reserve Chairman under Presidents Carter and Reagan, went to work for the Rothschilds as chairman of the European investment-banking firm, J. Rothschild, Wolfensohn and Co. in March 1992. Since February 2009, he has been the Chairman of the Economic Recovery Advisory Board under the obedient President Barack Obama who continues to decimate the economy at the behest of the international bankers. Richard N. Goodwin, former speechwriter for President John F. Kennedy (assassinated in 1963), said, “The principal power in Washington is no longer the government or the people it represents. It is the Money Power. Under the deceptive cloak of campaign contributions, access and influence, votes and amendments are bought and sold. Money establishes priorities of action, holds down federal revenues, revises federal legislation, and shifts income from the middle class to the very rich.”¹⁶ “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

There’s a certain irony to my reading this book while waiting at the Food Stamp office. I’m part of an increasing number suffering under the New World Order’s systematic destruction of the planet’s middle classes so as to concentrate wealth in the hands of fewer and fewer families. While global uprisings now threaten global governance under a single currency, scheming rulers have long anticipated this reaction. In The Global Economic Crisis, we learn exactly how a planet-wide military dictatorship plans to enforce its feudal vision.
Neatly organized into five sections comprising 20 essays by fifteen different authors, Global Economic Crisis carefully ties militarization with the planned economic meltdown. Client states and the U.S. itself have openly and sometimes secretly developed the legal framework for martial law. Testifying before a US Senate committee on Intelligence in early 2009, Obama’s Director of National Intelligence, Dennis Blair, warned that civil unrest owing to the economic collapse posed a greater threat than Arab terrorism. One of the book’s essayists, Bill Van Auken, points out that this is the first time in several years that Al Qaeda did not top the list of threats to national security.
The book’s major theme, supported by well-documented sources (and we expect nothing less from Global Research), hammers out the connection between military dominance and planned economic crises. Cuts in social spending augment the buildup of arms. Intellectual property laws bolster control of the world’s food supply by a handful of multinational corporations. Captured by transnational corporations that escape national anti-trust laws, the “free market” has given way to corporate control of prices, while driving down wages. Social protest of such polices is met by military and police violence.
In GEC, we learn that today’s global economy is driven by trade in oil, arms, drugs, and slavery (including prostitution). Where neoliberalism flourishes, so do these sectors. On the drug trade, Michel Chossudovsky writes, “The underlying military and intelligence objective is to protect the cocaine and heroin markets, which feed billions of narco-dollars into the Western banking system.” Indeed, a recent report by Bloomberg News exposed how Bank of America and Wachovia (now owned by Wells Fargo) finances Mexico’s drug cartels:

“They are multinational businesses, after all,” says [Mexican Senator Felipe] Gonzalez, as he slowly loads his revolver at his desk in his Mexico City office. “And they cannot work without a bank.”
One can travel to any major city in the world and buy supposedly illegal drugs, arms, prostitutes or slaves. The level of infrastructure required for such a ubiquitous global market implies government and banking support.Those writing about the social and economic ramifications of globalist actions will greatly appreciate Peter Phillips’ essay, “Poverty and Social Inequality.” It’s chock full of charts laying out facts and statistics.
One of the more intricate essays, “The Political Economy of World Government,” details how economic classes are being restructured, with the potential for the middle classes to unite “using access to knowledge, resources and skills to shape transnational processes.” In this piece, Andrew Gavin Marshall shows how various private interest groups like the Council on Foreign Relations, the Bilderberg group and the Trilateral Commission are deliberately restructuring society to make national borders irrelevant.
On par, Ellen Brown’s piece, “The Towers of Basel: Secretive Plan to create a Global Central Bank” shows how a shadowy global banking committee can break national economies, or boost them if the country does what the moneylenders dictate.
Not entirely an easy read, Global Economic Crisis nonetheless exposes the deep underworkings of a criminal class of bankers and industrialists who serve their own economic interests at the expense of everyone else, backed up by an expanding global military presence.

The last book to get me this angry was John Perkins’ Confessions of an Economic Hitman. Like Confessions, strategies to circumvent and overturn the globalists’ plans are offered in GEC. The “Cook Plan,” for example, emphasizes the need to dissolve the debt-based monetary system – a theme often discussed by Ellen Brown. Claudia von Werlhoff also offers alternatives, describing the various labor and peasant movements that restore local economies while protecting the environment from the ravages of corporate ecocide.
By fully digesting the information presented, the world’s people can best strategize effective resistance. Nonviolence has been a key feature of street protests and strikes that started in Greece and France last year, though often met with violence by police and military. But the stark “austerity” measures neoliberals are foisting on the globe, while they rake in trillions of dollars in bankster bailouts and no-bid contracts, have emboldened populists across Northern Africa. Austerity has even inspired the otherwise anemic US labor movement, with protests spreading from Wisconsin to Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and beyond.
Such street action must also be coupled with direct measures taken at the local level, however. It is here that the ideas presented in Global Economic Crisis can be of most use. By understanding how banks engineered this “bloodless coup,” we find impetus for restoring national sovereignty and a more sane and equitable economy.

Why 2012?

THE HOW AND WHY OF THE MAYAN END DATE IN 2012 A.D.

Why did the ancient Mayan or pre-Maya choose December 21st, 2012 A.D., as the end of their Long Count calendar? This article will cover some recent research. Scholars have known for decades that the 13-baktun cycle of the Mayan "Long Count" system of timekeeping was set to end precisely on a winter solstice, and that this system was put in place some 2300 years ago. This amazing fact - that ancient Mesoameri- can skywatchers were able to pinpoint a winter solstice far off into the future - has not been dealt with by Mayanists. And why did they choose the year 2012? One immediately gets the impression that there is a very strange mystery to be confronted here. I will be building upon a clue to this mystery reported by epigrapher Linda Schele in Maya Cosmos (1994). This article is the natural culmination of the research relating to the Mayan Long Count and the precession of the equinoxes that I explored in my recent book Tzolkin: Visionary Perspectives and Calendar Studies (Borderlands Science and Research Foundation, 1994).

The Mayan Long Count

Just some basics to get us started. The Maya were adept skywatchers. Their Classic Period is thought to have lasted from 200 A.D. to 900 A.D., but recent archeological findings are pushing back the dawn of Mayan civilization in Mesoamerica. Large ruin sites indicating high culture with distinctly Mayan antecedents are being found in the jungles of Guatemala dating back to before the common era. And even before this, the Olmec civilization flourished and developed the sacred count of 260 days known as the tzolkin. The early Maya adopted two different time keeping systems, the "Short Count" and the Long Count. The Short Count derives from combining the tzolkin cycle with the solar year and the Venus cycle of 584 days. In this way, "short" periods of 13, 52 and 104 years are generated. Unfortunately, we won't have occasion to dwell on the properties of the so-called Short Count system here. The Long Count system is somewhat more abstract, yet is also related to certain astronomical cycles. It is based upon nested cycles of days multiplied at each level by that key Mayan number, twenty:

Notice that the only exception to multiplying by twenty is at the tun level, where the uinal period is instead multiplied by 18 to make the 360-day tun. The Maya employed this counting system to track an unbroken sequence of days from the time it was inaugurated. The Mayan scholar Munro Edmonson believes that the Long Count was put in place around 355 B.C. This may be so, but the oldest Long Count date as yet found corresponds to 32 B.C. We find Long Count dates in the archeological record beginning with the baktun place value and separated by dots. For example: 6.19.19.0.0 equals 6 baktuns, 19 katuns, 19 tuns, 0 uinals and 0 days. Each baktun has 144000 days, each katun has 7200 days, and so on. If we add up all the values we find that 6.19.19.0.0 indicates a total of 1007640 days have elapsed since the Zero Date of 0.0.0.0.0. The much discussed 13-baktun cycle is completed 1872000 days (13 baktuns) after 0.0.0.0.0. This period of time is the so called Mayan "Great Cycle" of the Long Count and equals 5125.36 years.

But how are we to relate this to a time frame we can understand? How does this Long Count relate to our Gregorian calendar? This problem of correlating Mayan time with "western" time has occupied Mayan scholars since the beginning. The standard question to answer became: what does 0.0.0.0.0 (the Long Count "beginning" point) equal in the Gregorian calendar? When this question is answered, archeological inscriptions can be put into their proper historical context and the end date of the 13-baktun cycle can be calculated. After years of considering data from varied fields such as astronomy, ethnography, archeology and iconography, J. Eric S. Thompson determined that 0.0.0.0.0 correponded to the Julian date 584283, which equals August 11th, 3114 B.C. in our Gregorian calendar. This means that the end date of 13.0.0.0.0, some 5125 years later, is December 21st, 2012 A.D.1

The relationship between the Long Count and Short Count has always been internally consistent (both were tracked alongside each other in an unbroken sequence since their conception). Now it is very interesting to note that an aspect of the "Short Count", namely, the sacred tzolkin count of 260 days, is still being followed in the highlands of Guatemala. As the Mayan scholar Munro Edmonson shows in The Book of the Year, this last surviving flicker of a calendar tradition some 3000 years old supports the Thompson correlation of 584283. Edmonson also states that the Long Count was begun by the Maya or pre-Maya around 355 B.C., but there is reason to believe that the Long Count system was being perfected for at least 200 years prior to that date.

The point of interest for these early astronomers seems to have been the projected end date in 2012 A.D., rather than the beginning date in 3114 B.C. Having determined the end date in 2012 (for reasons we will come to shortly), and calling it 13.0.0.0.0, they thus proclaimed themselves to be living in the 6th baktun of the Great Cycle. The later Maya certainly attributed much mythological significance to the beginning date, relating it to the birth of their deities, but it now seems certain that the placement of the Long Count hinges upon its calculated end point. Why did early Mesoamerican skywatchers pick a date some 2300 years into the future and, in fact, how did they pinpoint an accurate winter solstice? With all these considerations one begins to suspect that, for some reason, the ancient New World astronomers were tracking precession.

The Precession

The precession of the equinoxes, also known as the Platonic Year, is caused by the slow wobbling of the earth's polar axis. Right now this axis roughly points to Polaris, the "Pole Star," but this changes slowly over long periods of time. The earth's wobble causes the position of the seasonal quarters to slowly precess against the background of stars. For example, right now, the winter solstice position is in the constellation of Sagittarius. But 2000 years ago it was in Capricorn. Since then, it has precessed backward almost one full sign. It is generally thought that the Greek astronomer Hipparchus was the first to discover precession around 128 B.C. Yet scholarship indicates that more ancient Old World cultures such as the Egyptians (see Schwaller de Lubicz's book Sacred Science) and Babylonians also knew about the precession.

I have concluded that even cultures with simple horizon astronomy and oral records passed down for a hundred years or so, would notice the slow shifting of the heavens. For example, imagine that you lived in an environment suited for accurately demarcated horizon astronomy. Even if this wasn't the case, you might erect monoliths to sight the horizon position of, most likely, the dawning winter solstice sun. This position in relation to background stars could be accurately preserved in oral verse or wisdom teachings, to be passed down for centuries. Since precession will change this position at the rate of 1 degree every 72 years, within the relatively short time of 100 years or so, a noticeable change will have occurred. The point of this is simple. To early cultures attuned to the subtle movements of the sky, precession would not have been hard to notice.2

The Maya are not generally credited with knowing about the precession of the equinoxes. But considering everything else we know about the amazing sophistication of Mesoamerican astronomy, can we realistically continue to deny them this? Many of the as yet undeciphered hieroglyphs may ultimately describe precessional myths. Furthermore, as I show in my book Tzolkin: Visionary Perspectives and Calendar Studies, the Long Count is perfectly suited for predicting future seasonal quarters, indefinitely, and precession is automatically accounted for. Some of the most incredible aspects of Mayan cosmo-conception are just now being discovered. As was the case with the state of Egyptology in the 1870's, we still have a lot to learn. In addition, Mayanists like Gordon Brotherston (The Book of the Fourth World) consider precessional knowledge among Mesoamerican cultures to be more than likely.

The Sacred Tree

We are still trying to answer these questions: What is so important about the winter solstice of 2012 and, exactly how were calculations made so accurately, considering that precession should make them exceedingly difficult?

If we make a standard horoscope chart for December 21st, 2012 A.D., nothing very unusual appears. In this way I was led astray in my search until Linda Schele provided a clue in the recent book Maya Cosmos. Probably the most exciting breakthrough in this book is her identification of the astronomical meaning of the Mayan Sacred Tree. Drawing from an impressive amount of iconographic evidence, and generously sharing the process by which she arrived at her discovery, the Sacred Tree is found to be none other than the crossing point of the ecliptic with the band of the Milky Way. Indeed, the Milky Way seems to have played an important role in Mayan imagery. For example, an incised bone from 8th century Tikal depicts a long sinking canoe containing various deities. This is a picture of the night sky and the canoe is the Milky Way, sinking below the horizon as the night progresses, and carrying with it deities representing the nearby constellations. The incredible Mayan site of Palenque is filled with Sacred Tree motifs and references to astronomical events. In their book Forest of Kings, Schele and Freidel suggested that the Sacred Tree referred to the ecliptic. Apparently that was only part of the picture, for the Sacred Tree that Pacal ascends in death is more than just the ecliptic, it is the sacred doorway to the underworld. The crossing point of Milky Way and ecliptic is this doorway and represents the sacred source and origin. In the following diagram of the well known sarcophagus carving, notice that the Milky Way tree serves as an extension of Pacal's umbilicus. The umbilicus is a human being's entrance into life, and entrance into death as well:

We may also remember at this point that the tzolkin calendar is said to spring from the Sacred Tree. The Sacred Tree is, in fact, at the center of the entire corpus of Mayan Creation Myths. We should definitely explore the nature of this astronomical feature.

The first question that came up for me was as follows. Since Lord (Ahau) Pacal is, by way of divine kingship, equated with the sun, and he is portrayed "entering" the Sacred Tree on his famous sarcophagus lid, on what day does the sun come around to conjunct the crossing point of ecliptic and Milky Way? This would be an important date. In the pre-dawn skies of this date, the Milky Way would be seen to arch overhead from the region of Polaris (Heart of Sky) and would point right at where the sun rises. This (and the corollary date 6 months later) is the only date when the Sun/Lord could jump from the ecliptic track and travel the Milky Way up and around the vault of heaven to the region of Polaris, there to enter the "Heart of Sky." It should be mentioned that 1300 years ago, during the zenith of Palenque's glory, Polaris was much less an exact "Pole Star" than it is now. Schele demonstrates that it wasn't a Pole Star that the Maya mythologized in this regard, it was the unmarked polar "dark region" symbolizing death and the underworld around which everything was observed to revolve. Life revolves around death - a characteristically Mayan belief. The dates on which the sun conjuncts the "Sacred Tree" are thus very important. These dates will change with precession. Schele doesn't pursue this line of reasoning, however, and doesn't even mention that these dates might be significant. If we go back to 755 A.D., we find that the sun conjuncts the Sacred Tree on December 3rd. I should point out here that the Milky Way is a wide band, and perhaps a 10-day range of dates should be considered.

To start with, however, I use the exact center of the Milky Way band that one finds on star charts, known as the "Galactic Equator" (not to be confused with Galactic Center). Where the Galactic Equator crosses the ecliptic in Sagittarius just happens to be where the dark rift in the Milky Way begins. This is a dark bifurcation in the Milky Way caused by interstellar dust clouds. To observers on earth, it appears as a dark road which begins near the ecliptic and stretches along the Milky Way up towards Polaris. The Maya today are quite aware of this feature; the Quich» Maya call it xibalba be (the "road to Xibalba") and the Chorti Maya call it the "camino de Santiago". In Dennis Tedlock's translation of the Popol Vuh, we find that the ancient Maya called it the "Black Road". The Hero Twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque must journey down this road to battle the Lords of Xibalba. (Tedlock 334, 358). Furthermore, what Schele has identified as the Sacred Tree was known to the ancient Quich» simply as "Crossroads."

This celestial feature was not marginal in ancient Mayan thought and is still rec- ognized even today. In terms of how this feature was mythologized, it seems that when a planet, the sun, or the moon entered the dark cleft of the Milky Way in Sagittarius (which happens to be the exact center of the Milky Way, the Galactic Equator), entrance to the underworld road was possible, which could then take the journeyer up to the Heart of Sky. Shamanic vision rites were probably involved in this scenario. In the Yucatan, underground caves were ritual places used by shaman to journey to the underworld. Schele explains that "Mayan mythology identifies the Road to Xibalba as going through a cave" (Forest of Kings, 209). Here we have a metaphorical reference to the "dark rift" in the Milky Way by way of its terrestrial counterpart, a syncretism between earth and sky which is characteristic of Mayan thinking. Above all, what is becoming apparent from the corpus of Mayan Creation Myths is that creation seems to have taken place at a celestial crossroads - the crossing point of ecliptic and Milky Way.

To clarify this ever growing picture, we should stop here and plot out some charts. In addition to the detailed star maps from Norton's 2000.0 Star Atlas which allowed me to pinpoint the crossing point of Galactic Equator and ecliptic, I use EZCosmos to plot these positions3. What I found answers the question of why the Maya chose the winter solstice of 2012, a problem seemingly avoided by astronomers and Mayanists alike. While it is true that the sun conjuncts the Sacred Tree on December 3rd in the year 755 A.D., over the centuries precession has caused the conjunction date to approach the winter solstice. So, how close are we to perfect conjunction today? Exactly when might we expect the winter solstice sun to conjunct the crossing point of Galactic Equator and ecliptic - the Mayan Sacred Tree? Any astronomer will tell you that, presently, the Milky Way crosses the ecliptic through the constellation of Sagittarius and this area is rich in nebulae and high density objects. In fact, where the Milky Way crosses the ecliptic in Sagittarius also happens to be the direction of the Galactic Center.4

The Charts

So the quest returns to identifying why December 21st, 2012 A.D. might represent some kind of astronomical anomoly. I'll get right to the heart of the matter. Let's look at a few charts.

Chart 1.

Here is a full view of the sky at noon on December 21st, 2012 A.D. The band of the Milky Way can be seen stretching from the lower right to the upper left. The more or less vertical dotted line indicates the Galactic Equator. The planets can be seen tracing a roughly horizontal path through the chart, indicating the ecliptic. The sun, quite strikingly, is dead center in the Sacred Tree. Let's look closer.

Chart 2.

The field is now reduced from a horizon-to-horizon view to a field of 30 degrees. Part of the constellation of Sagittarius can be seen in the lower left portion of the chart. The planet in the middle-to-upper left portion of the chart is Pluto, which rarely travels directly along the ecliptic. The center square near the sun is placed on the Trifid Nebula (M20). According to the star chart I used, this nebula is very close to the crossing point of Galactic Equator and ecliptic. However, a small star (4 Sgr) is even closer; it sits right on the Galactic Equator and its declination is only 00 .08' below the ecliptic. Let's look closer at these features.

Chart 3.

The field is now reduced to a 5-degree span, what astrology considers to be within conjunction. The dot to the lower right of the sun is the star 4 Sgr. Amazingly, the Sun is right on target. We couldn't have hoped for a closer conjunction. 1 day before or after will remove the sun a noticeable distance from the crossing point. December 21st, 2012 (13.0.0.0.0 in the Long Count) therefore represents an extremely close conjunction of the winter solstice sun with the crossing point of Galactic Equator and the ecliptic, what the ancient Maya recognized as the Sacred Tree. It is critical to understand that the winter solstice sun rarely conjuncts the Sacred Tree. In fact, this is an event that has been coming to resonance very slowly over thousands and thousands of years. What this might mean astrologically, how this might effect the "energy weather" on earth, must be treated as a separate topic.

But I should at least mention in passing that this celestial convergence appears to parallel the accelerating pace of human civilization. It should be noted that because precession is a very slow process, similar astronomical alignments will be evident on the winter solstice dates within perhaps 5 years on either side of 2012. However, the accuracy of the conjunction of 2012 is quite astounding, beyond anything deemed calculable by the ancient Maya, and serves well to represent the perfect mid-point of the process.

Let's go back to the dawn of the Long Count and try to reconstruct what may have been happening.

Why: Winter Solstice Sun Conjuncts The Sacred Tree in 2012 A.D.

First, the tzolkin count originated among the Olmec at least as early as 679 B.C. (see Edmonson's Book of the Year). We may suspect that astronomical observations were being made from at least that point. The tzolkin count has been followed unbroken since at least that time, up to the present day, demonstrating the high premium placed by the Maya upon continuity of tradition. In this way, star records, horizon positions of the winter solstice sun, and other pertinent observations could also have been accurately preserved. As suggested above, precession can be noticed by way of even simple horizon astronomy in as little time as 100 to 150 years. (Hipparchus, the alleged "discoverer" of precession among the Greeks, compared his own observations with data collected only 170 years before his time.) Following Edmonson, the Long Count system may have appeared as early as 355 B.C. Part of the reason for implementing the Long Count system, as I will show, was probably to calculate future winter solstice dates.

We must assume that even at this early point in Mesoamerican history, the crossing point of ecliptic and Milky Way was understood as the "Sacred Tree". Since the Sacred Tree concept is intrinsically tied into the oldest Mayan Creation Myths, this is not improbable. At the very least, the "dark rift" was already a recognized feature. Early skywatchers of this era (355 B.C.) would then observe the sun to conjunct the dark ridge in the Milky Way on or around November 18th.5 This would be easily observed in the pre-dawn sky as described above: the Milky Way points to the rising sun on this date.

Over a relatively short period of time, as an awareness of precession was emerging, this date was seen to slowly approach winter solstice, a critical date in its own right in early Mayan cosmo-conception. At this point, precession and the rate of precession was calculated, the Long Count was perfected and inaugurated, and the appropriate winter solstice date in 2012 A.D. was found via the Long Count in the following way.

How: Long Count and Seasonal Quarters

Long Count katun beginnings will conjunct sequential seasonal quarters every 1.7.0.0.0 days (194400 days). This is an easily tracked Long Count interval. Starting with the katun beginning of 650 B.C.:

Note that the last date is not only a katun beginning, but a baktun beginning as well. It is, indeed, the end date of 2012.6

The Long Count may have been officially inaugurated on a specific date in 355 B.C., as Edmonson suggests, but it must have been formulated, tried, tested, and proven before this date. This may well have taken centuries, and the process no doubt paralleled (and was perhaps instigated by) the discovery of precession. The Long Count system automatically accounts for precession in its ability to calculate future seasonal quarters - a property which shouldn't be underestimated.

Summary

This has been my attempt to fill a vacuum in Mayan Studies, an answer to the why and how of the end date of the 13-baktun cycle of the Mayan Long Count. The solution requires a shift in how we think about the astronomy of the Long Count end date. The strange fact that it occurs on a winter solstice immediately points us to possible astronomical reasons, but they are not obvious. We also shouldn't forget the often mentioned fact that the 13-baktun cycle of some 5125 years is roughly 1/5th of a precessional cycle. This in itself should have been suggestive of a deeper mystery very early on. Only with the recent identification of the astronomical nature of the Sacred Tree has the puzzle revealed its fullness. And once again we are amazed at the sophistication and vision of the ancient New World astronomers, the decendants of whom still count the days and watch the skies in the remote outbacks of Guatemala.

This essay is not contrived upon sketchy evidence. It basically rests upon two facts:

1) the well known end date of the 13-baktun cycle of the Mayan Long Count, which is December 21st, 2012 A.D. and

2) the astronomical situation on that day. Based upon these two facts alone, the creators of the Long Count knew about and calculated the rate of precession over 2300 years ago. I can conceive of no other conclusion. To explain this away as "coincidence" would only obscure the issue.

For early Mesoamerican skywatchers, the slow approach of the winter solstice sun to the Sacred Tree was seen as a critical process, the culmination of which was surely worthy of being called 13.0.0.0.0, the end of a World Age. The channel would then be open through the winter solstice doorway, up the Sacred Tree, the Xibalba be , to the center of the churning heavens, the Heart of Sky.

Notes:

1Linda Schele and David Freidel, unlike most Mayanists, continue to support the work of Floyd Lounsbury in promoting the 584285 correlation. This is 2 days off from the Thompson correlation that I use. The decisive factor in supporting the Thompson correlation of 584283 is the fact that it corresponds with the tzolkin count still followed in the highlands of Guatemala. To account for this discrepency in his correlation, Lounsbury claims that the count was shifted back two days sometime before the conquest (not likely), thus explaining its present placement. This means that either correlation will give the December 21st end date. Nevertheless, Schele and Freidel still report that the end date is December 23rd, 2012 rather than Dec. 21st, an unfortunate faux pas understandable only because they aren't particularly interested in the specifics of the correlation debate. For a detailed discussion of this topic, refer to my book Tzolkin: Visionary Perspectives and Calendar Studies.

2Case in point is the mysterious existence of myths obviously describing precession in the ancient verses of the Kalevala, the Finnish National Epic. These myths were relayed from the earliest times by way of singers. Many of these stories are thoroughly magical and are filled with sky lore. The Finnish language is not of Indo- European origin and up until the late 19th century peasants in Finland and northwestern Russia had little contact with Europe. Indeed, their heritage suggests more contact with Central Asia than Europe. Some of the Kalevala stories describe a sacred Mill called the Sampo (derived from sanskrit Skambha = pillar or pole) with a "many ciphered cover". This spinning Mill is a metaphor for a Golden Age of plenty and the starry sky spinning around the Pole Star (known as the Nail of the North), which in the Far North is almost straight over head. The Mill at some point is disturbed, its pillar being pulled out of its peg, and a new one - a new "age" - must be constructed. This becomes the chore of Ilmarinen, the primeval smith. In this legend, ancient knowledge of precession among unsophisticated "peasants" who were nonetheless astute skywatchers, was preserved via oral tradition almost down to modern times.

3EZCosmos is a graphic software package that can accurately plot and animate the positions of planets, stars, nebula and so on, for 14,000 years. It is well suited to this research because it accounts for precession in its positional calculations. It also happens to be the software that Linda Schele used to discover the astronomical meaning of the Mayan Sacred Tree.

4 Here we briefly converge with the ideas of Terence McKenna. In the book he co- authored with his brother Dennis (Invisible Landscape, Seabury Press 1975 and Harper San Francisco, 1993), Terence suggests that the position of winter solstice sun within 3 degrees of the Galactic Center in the year 2012 A.D. (a "once-in-a-precessional- cycle" event) may provide the eschatological end point for his theory of time known as Timewave Zero. His end date was chosen for historical reasons and was, apparently, only later discovered to correspond with the Mayan end date. The McKennas point out that this unusual astronomical situation has been noted by other writers, namely, Giorgio de Santillana and Hertha von Dechend in Hamlet's Mill (1969). As ACS Publication's The American Ephemeris for the 21st Century shows, in the year 2012 the Galactic Center is at 27 Sagittarius (within 3 of winter solstice). Thus McKenna demonstrates that on winter solstice of 2012, Galactic Center will be rising heliacally just before dawn, in a way reminiscent of how the Maya observed Venus's last morningstar appearance.

5This basically follows the "1 degree every 72 years" rule of precession. In this way, back in 3114 B.C. the sun conjuncted the Sacred Tree on Oct 10th, which is 72 degrees, or 1/5th of the ecliptic from the winter solstice. The Fall Equinox sun conjuncted the Sacred Tree about 6400 years ago (1/4th of a precessional cycle). Ancient cultures in Mesopotamia may have recognized this alignment, and called it a Golden Age. The fall from this state of alignment may be responsible for the original Fall from Paradise myth, which filtered out to the Judaic tradition.

6The Long Count has other strange astronomical properties. For instance, the 13- katun cycle of 256 years was known to the Yucatec Maya as a prophecy cycle. We see it used in the Books of Chilam Balam. The astronomical reference here is to conjunction cycles of Uranus and Pluto, two of which equal 256 years. From another angle, 3 katuns equal exactly 37 synodical cycles of Venus.
